Conferences, Seminars, and Courses

Conferences and seminars:

Weekly Monday morning preoperative and postoperative surgery conference. Medical Center Louisiana (MCLA), 7-9 am. In this conference, the residents on rotation on OMS present patients who they plan to operate, as well as operated cases to review their progress. The residents are expected to present the patients with an understanding of the treatment involved. Staff actively facilitate discussion of these cases.

Advanced Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery weekly seminar – 2 hours on Tuesday. 5:00-5:30 pm industry presentation, 5:30 – 7:00 pm lecture. Required for all residents on clinical oral and maxillofacial surgery rotations. Includes All OMS staff. Includes OMS Journal Club. This weekly conference provides didactic presentations given by staff, residents, and invited speakers from other departments in the Health Sciences Center. Cases are also presented so that all residents can share in the learning process.

Hospital orientation: Staff in MCLA. 4 hours for all first year residents


Courses:

Differential Diagnosis of Oral Lesions: Dr. Jim Cade. July - November, Thursday 3:00 – 5:00 pm. 52 hours. For all first year residents

Postgraduate Implantology: Drs. Guerra, Block, Finger, and Yukna. July. 8:00 – 5:00 pm. Required for all residents rotating through LSU SD. 16 hours

Histopathology for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residents: Dr. Robert Brannon. Tuesdays 3:30 – 5:00 pm. 10 sessions from September through June. 15 hours. Required for all first, fifth, and sixth year residents.

Postgraduate Head and Neck Anatomy: Drs. Whitworth, Malloy, and McCluggage. August through January, Wednesday 1:00 – 5:00 pm. 48 hours. Required for all first year residents.

Surgical orthodontics: Dr.Kent and staff from OMS and Orthodontic departments. 22 hours. Fifth and sixth year residents.

Anesthesia lecture series: Dr. Thomas and staff. Tuesday 3:00 – 5:00 pm, 12 sessions, 24 hours. For all residents.

Advanced Oral and Maxillofacial clinical pathology conference. Dr. Robert Brannon. These CPCs are presented as part of the weekly seminar series Tuesday evenings. Approximately 8 sessions/year.

Core curriculum lecture series: for LSUMS house officers. Fridays noon – 1 pm. Optional for all residents. Monthly for 12 months

Introduction to Clinical Medicine: Medical School staff. Year long course at the medical school for all first year residents.

Clinical Medicine, dermatology, and clinical pathology course. Half year long course for all first year residents

Review course in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery: Dr. Kent, staff, and invited speakers. 7 days, 8:00 am – 7:00 pm.

Cosmetic course in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery: Dr. Ghali, Dr. Stover, and invited speakers. January, 2001, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, 2 days.

Investigative project: one investigative project suitable for publication is required during training.
