Goals and Objectives of the Advanced Specialty Program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
The Goals and Objectives of the Advanced Specialty Program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery are to train residents to competence in the specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and advancing the specialty. The graduating resident from this program should be proficient in all aspects of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery as evaluated by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Specific goals and objectives:
1. To ensure residents receive training in the basic sciences, didactics, and associated clinical oral and maxillofacial surgery. To educate the student in the basic and clinical sciences that involve treatment of the patient, including advanced coursework in dental implants, out-patient sedation, general anesthesia, anatomy, pathology, orthognathic surgery, physical diagnosis, clinical pathophysiology, trauma reconstruction and cosmetic surgery, dentoalveolar surgery, TMJ surgery, and other forms of maxillofacial reconstruction including direct exposure to head and neck oncology and microvascular surgery.
2. To develop adequate, appropriate necessary diagnostic skills. The objectives of the educational program which includes clinical rotations in a variety of subsurgical specialties, include competence in surgical treatment in all of the areas evaluated by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
3. To develop the clinical skills needed to perform the full scope of ambulatory and inpatient oral and maxillofacial surgery.
4. To provide patient care for the citizens of Louisiana concerning the area of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Patient care is delivered to patients within the Charity Hospital system of Louisiana, Earl K. Long Memorial Hospital, the University OMS Charlotte service, to patients within the LSU School of Dentistry, and the private practices of LSU-OMS faculty members.
5. To perform research to advance the specialty and understanding of the basic and clinical science for improving patient care. An objective of this OMS program is to provide each student with a research experience that will allow them a better understanding of future developments within the specialty.
The ultimate goal of the Advanced Education Program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is Board certification of its graduates. Graduates of the program are monitored for their performance on this certifying examination and the program director contacts each individual who takes the ABOMS written and oral examinations to discuss the adequacy of the program goals and objectives in relation to their individual performance.
