Eligibility for selection and for admission of students is as follows:

Applicants must be graduates or seniors in the upper 25% of their class, from a dental school that is recognized by the Council on Dental Education of the American Dental Association. Applications from graduates at dental schools outside the U.S. and Canada will be considered as space permits. Participation in the post-doctoral application support service (PASS) program is required. Additional experience beyond dental school may strengthen the applicant’s credentials and can be forwarded directly to the program. After all applications have been received and reviewed, invitations for interviews are sent by the program director of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

The matching program has been used since 1986. The program is sponsored by the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and is administered through the national matching service. Once the applications are received, they are reviewed by all full-time faculty and a short list of approximately 20 students is created. Those on the short list are invited for interviews over a three to four week period of time in the fall by members of the admission committee of the medical school, selected residents, and full-time and part-time Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery faculty. An evaluation form is completed and includes various rating scales for academic performance, activities outside the academic realm, and additional leadership qualities. The medical school advises whether an applicant is or is not eligible for the program. The names of the selected candidates are submitted by the program director to the dental school advanced education committee for final approval. If approved, the final rank order selection list is submitted to the PASS.

The anticipated dates for the 2008 interviews will be November 3-4, 2008 and November 10-11, 2008. An applicant will be scheduled for one of these two interview sessions.
